nurse educators

The role of nurse educators is potentially limitless. Most nurse educators associate themselves with schools of nursing by beginning as clinical or online instructors. The potential is there to be much more pubishing research, writing for CEUs, or providing educational services as consultants. There are a number of boards of nursing and state boards of health that also employ masters prepared nurse educators.
My interest is in writing for CEUs, particularly for state approval not frequently available online. I am in the process of putting together a CEU course addressing the impact Florence Nightengale had on the practice of nursing. I have incorporated some little known information that is not ordinarily included in most nursing programs.
How do you see the future of nurse educators affecting the future of nursing?

  4. Ann,

I read previously that your goal is to teach in the online environment. Do you currently teach online courses? I have found that while searching for online instructor positions there are many blogsites that speak about the lack of those types of jobs. Just wondering if you already had a position and if not what are your strategies for finding one? Thanks, Denise

  5. I am not currently working as an online instructor. My strategy for locating such a postition was to begin as an adjunct in this role. Those who post on blogsites stating that there are few online instructor positions may be addressing the issue of full time instruction.
What do you see as the future role of nurse educators?

  6. Hi Ann,
I know that we a moving in a direction where all nursing programs offer the online alternative in instruction. I have noticed in my area that adjunct faculty positions are usually those positions reserved for clincal nursing instructors. I have to wonder if budget restrictions and the downward spiral of the economy is causing a decline in the number of full-time faculty positions. Do you have any thoughts on this?

  7. Denise, the number of adjunct faculty seem to be greater than those working in full time positions for both ground and online programs. This leaves most programs operating with instructors who may have other jobs outside of teaching nursing.
What do you think we can do to change this pattern?
